Matthew Birkel was on Team 2081 from 2006 to 2010. He was on the Software sub-team all four years, and served as software captain from 2008 to 2010. Matthew had participated in LEGO League before joining Icarus, so he knew before joining the team that he wanted to study engineering in college. However team Icarus helped him narrow down to the field of Computer Engineering. His freshman year at the University of Illinois, Matthew was captain of his Engineering Freshman Committee robotics team. However, that could not fulfill his passion for robotics instituted by FIRST and Team 2081. So he founded iRobotics, an organization "designed to follow the model of FIRST by exciting students to build robots for competitions while also inspiring them to spread the word and give back to the community". iRobotics now has over 70 students competing on 7 teams in three collegiate robotics competitions. He has also mentored FLL teams and took the role of head referee for multiple FLL tournaments.
